Magic Fantasy Novel

My Kindle Vella serial published novel Sparrows Legacy plots the adventures of Tara (19) and Teng (14), siblings who survive the attack of their Matie, Trine “Sparrow” Sworden. They soon learn the reason for her brutal death is by their unknown Uncle Endric who usurped her promised rule as Pashier, in her home country of Flarentine. Now the two survivors are her legacy to the ruling family of a country they know nothing about. As a prophecy is brought forth, of a mysterious and deadly Protector, Tara and Teng are running to survive the evil henchmen sent to take them through the Arish lands their mother brought them to when she once escaped her brother.

In the novel, there is a fair bit of magic being introduced. Tara and Teng both have some special skills. While Tara can smell magic, Teng is able to Skry (float in spectral form from his body). And we introduce Chiri and Cree, twin sisters from Flarentine that can communicate from any distance.

I intended this novel to share magic and technology. For example, some characters are transported from long distances to other locations by stepping on a circular transport disc the size of your hand. There is the history of a Christi, a beacon that Sparrow wore that would locate her if ever initialized. It becomes active the moment she dies. Chiri is immediately sent near Sparrow’s location upon her magical ability to locate the Christi. Her clan of Mir-e-se warriors support and have been searching for Sparrow since she disappeared.

Sharing Magic

Additional magic is found in some creatures introduced later in the novel, such as the Obakia shifter Owl of one of the Mir-e-se officers, and the Pregota, named Bengal, a battle armored cat. And there are magical barriers of protections. As well, the Uncle Endric shares his affinity of being able to steal magic from those around him. He also has followers called the ASP warriors that are fighting the Mir-e-se in open civil conflict in Flarentine.

If this fantastical magic isn’t enough, the growing prophecy seems to follow the siblings as Tara and her strengths are recognized in protecting those she loves. A natural leader and even more natural slayer, she will not hesitate to strike down those that attempt to harm her and Teng.

Here is a sample of Sparrows Legacy.

They both recognized the awesome importance all Mir-e-se undertook when becoming a member, by sharing a blood oath and swearing to guard, protect, and serve until death. The royal families notwithstanding, Mir-e-se were first and foremost, guardians of all Flaren through any injustice. Add to this the additional duty assigned to Willmar, the elite First Mir-e-se, a title bestowed upon him by the ninth Pashier, Flarentines; beloved ruler of the time. He was bound by his vow, to mentor and support the young royal daughter, Pasia to rule in her father’s place. It was his direct charge, and he had failed. Although, as per the history, all who had perceived his sacrifices, knew Pasi Trine could not ask for a better champion in her name.
Cree motioned when Chiri finally adjusted her seated form to stretch out her legs. “Your shadows are thinning. You are tired, sister.”

Chiri felt the truth of those words. “Yes, I am exhausted, and tomorrow is going to be a trial. She is angry and probably overly protective of her brother. I saw this in her eyes. She already understands what I must ask.”
“The Protector?” Cree’s voice almost whispered.
Chiri nodded and looked at her sister’s expression. Cree seemed very worried.

“Do not be anxious, Cree. If she is the protector of Flaren’s right hand, she is the youngest, most inexperienced defender I have ever encountered. She is but 19 Ans. Although she shows the fiercest skills in some areas, I have yet to visualize her in an actual fight. At this time, she does nothing but grieves at the loss of her mother.” Chiri lowered her gaze in instant regret once again. The clear grass blades wove in and out beside her legs. The breeze that ruffled them never touched her skin.

“What does she look like? Can you envision a resemblance to the images we have been shown?” Cree asked curiously about the girl who was but a baby in most portraits that were created in their land. The outstanding feature was her eyes. Cree always liked those deep souls staring depths of the likenesses.

“She has the strength of her father’s training and yet the eyes of someone with knowledge far beyond her Ans. They are dark and mysterious, and still very prominent in her features, but for that, she is the spitting image of her mother. She will probably scare the armor off Willmar with her likeness, a walking ghost. She has darkened her hair to resemble the villagers, and she looks rather natural in her nocturnal dress.”

As Chiri spoke, she summoned an image of the girl of which she described. The clear portrait did not show the dark coloring or any hint of intelligence within her gaze but there before Cree was the memory-wrought picture of Tara from Chiri’s first glimpse.

Cree paused and looked the figure over. She tilted her head to the left and right to examine the features. “Yes, a very close resemblance. She looks vulnerable but also strong. I would love to meet this offspring of our late Pasia. I’m betting her wizardry is powerful. Her blood runs very deep from her mother.”

Chiri knit her brows in annoyance.

“I have not ascertained their magic skills or level.  It is too early.  I understand the boy attended school.  There will be a further report soon.  I must go now.  Dawn is only hours away and I need to sleep.”

Cree placed her palm up before her sibling, although they could not touch her.  Her gesture was enough.  Chiri positioned her hand up to that of her twin.

“Till we find a path to share again, my sister, stay safe,”  Cree said as she waved goodbye.

Chiri broke the meditative state and lifted her face from her chest in a deep sigh.  She froze at the feet that stood before her.  She found Tara looking down at her with an enigmatic expression.

“You should rest.  Magic is very draining.  We will need to move to the northern hunting grounds, and we leave at first light.”  Tara spoke, frankly.  Chiri felt a slight flicker of fear tighten in her stomach.  Somehow Tara knew she had not been sleeping.  She moved herself deeper into her small tent watching as Tara stepped to the fire to stoke and sit beside it.  The young woman’s brooding nature was in full force and Chiri could not help but stare and remember her own stubborn youth when she was nothing more than hopeful to join the Mir-e-se.

An eye on the time.

I hope you enjoyed this glimpse into the creation of magic in my ongoing novel Sparrows Legacy. Here are a few other authors that build magic effortlessly into their stories.

Pawn of Prophecy (The Belgariad, #1) by David Eddings – If you are a huge Wheel of Time reader or Game of Thrones watcher, invest some reading time with David Eddings. His magic and manipulation of his world-building are superb.

The Deed of Paksenarrion by Elizabeth Moon is probably one of the best war-based books that really sinks its teeth into the soldier’s life of drilling, formation, and battles, either on the front line or the entire battle coverage. However, the magic is still there. Boundless levels of elves and other magical creatures.

City of Bones by Cassandra Clare urban fantasy book of shadow hunters that works with Runes and Sorcery. PG13 style with the killing of demons.
